According to the American Institute of Stress, Retirement ranks #10 on the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory Scale, under Death of a Spouse, Divorce and Being Fired and above Major Change in Health of a Family Member, Sexual Difficulties and Death of a Close Friend. Since we are a species that avoids stress like the plague, is it any wonder we put off thinking about retirement until it’s imminently upon us?
What if we changed our approach? What if we could reduce the stress of retirement by facing it head-on, a year or two….or five… in advance? Not just in the financial sense, because those issues need to be addressed early on, the earlier the better. But, in the holistic sense: Is your health where you want it to be to enjoy a happy retirement? Is your “house” in order in terms of the relationships you have with your family? Do you have a social life outside of work that you enjoy? Are there hobbies, volunteer gigs or other activities that fulfill you and give you a sense of purpose?
The Fit-To-Retire readiness assessment is a great place to answer these questions and more to get your retirement planning off to a good start. Because stress is largely about fear of change, fear of the unknown. And, retirement can be a welcome change, if you know where you’re going.
