We Americans tend to define ourselves by the jobs we perform. When we meet someone new, the first question after the handshake usually is: “What do you do?” The answer typically prompts an ice-breaking, revelatory conversation:
What do you do?
I’m a tax attorney.
I could have used you two years ago.
IRS trouble?
Total nightmare!! Let me tell ya….
But, when one party is no longer employed, the conversation often comes to a halt before it gets off the ground:
What do you do?
I’m retired.
Oh. That’s nice.
Is it any wonder why so many of us – and we’re not just talking Type A’s – are reluctant to leave the work force?
What if we shifted our thinking, just a little? Instead of “I’m retired,” what if the answer to the “What do you do?” question was:
- I’m a volunteer carpenter for Habitat for Humanity.
- I’m learning how to be a sommelier.
- I drive a truck for the local food bank.
- I’m training for my first half-marathon.
- I’m studying for the ministry.
- My wife and I travel the country in our new RV.
- I mentor Junior Achievement kids at the high school.
- I’m acting at the community theatre.
See the difference? You’ve just gone from conversation-stopper to conversation-starter!
Why not let a certified Fit-To-Retire coach help you find your answer to the big question. After all, there are still plenty of interesting conversations left to be had.
