This story in Forbes is a great reminder to all of us here at Fit-To-Retire that we don’t know everything there is to know about retirement. Why? Because we’re still working, of course. There’s no first-person ‘been there, done that’ experience from which to draw when we advise our clients.
That’s why we’re constantly reading, researching and tapping our retired clients’ brains for insight. We continue to learn from their mistakes as well as their successes.
For instance, we can’t tell you how many clients have told us they wished they had had “the talk” with their spouses before they retired. “The talk,” in this case, is an honest exchange of ideas and expectations from each partner about how much time they will spend together each day, how they wish to spend the family nest egg (travel? spoiling the grandkids? recreational vehicles?) and who-does-what around the house when both spouses are at home. Other client regrets include putting off big-ticket expenditures (trips abroad, vacation homes, etc.) for too long and, in some cases, not retiring early enough to fully enjoy what they’ve earned.
Clients who enjoy a successful retirement tell us having a plan that includes a healthy social component, physical activity, and a deep sense of purpose is key. The specifics of the plan will likely change from year-to-year – and there will be surprises, good and bad – but knowing your certified Fit-To-Coach has your back, financially, can help you go with the flow wherever retirement takes you.
You’ll never really know what your own retirement will be like until you get there. But, with the Fit-To-Retire Readiness Roadmap, you’ll have a better chance of making sure your surprises are only nice ones!
