Use a vacation to “practice” for retirement

Are you planning your annual summer getaway to the beach or the mountains? A stay-cation at home, perhaps? Wherever you land, consider using this year’s holiday to try retirement on for size.

We’ll admit we discovered the idea in this post from the Wall Street Journal’s “The Experts” column which addresses all five of Fit-to-Retire’s identified areas of retirement success: Self-Identity, Social, Personal Relationships, Health & Nutrition and Financial.

Your “test run” could include activities you plan on pursuing in retirement such as volunteering, a regular exercise routine or even an art class. Wake up every morning (after sleeping late, if you want) and challenge yourself to do one thing just for fun and one thing for others. Immerse yourself in the activities, gauge your interest level and how quickly the hours go by. Adjust accordingly for tomorrow.

By giving yourself a trial run, you can increase your enthusiasm and decrease your anxiety for when the golden day actually arrives. You know what they say: Practice makes perfect!
