Managing stress in retirement

“In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers.”
— Fred “Mister” Rogers

We’ve always admired Mister Rogers’ elegant wisdom, if not his grandfatherly cardigans. He was such a calming presence on our TV sets, unlike the red-faced screaming heads of this distressing election cycle.

Let’s face it, stress is a constant for most of us these days. And despite those suntanned-seniors-frolicking-on-the-beach ads you see in magazines, the reality is: Your retirement will never be 100% stress-free. According to this breakdown from USA Today, the top five stressors in retirement are financial worries, health concerns, caregiving, relationship issues and change, in general.

Of course, we can’t control all stress factors, no matter how much we’d like to. (We’re looking at you, November 8th!) But, we can most assuredly control some and learn to cope with others. That’s what the Fit-To-Retire Readiness Roadmap is all about: Planning in a comprehensive, integrated way to head-off potential problems at the pass and smooth the path as much possible.

It starts with an an honest assessment of your interests, attitudes and fears in five categories – Financial Security, Health and Nutrition, Personal Relationships, Self-identity and Social. (How prepared are you? How enthusiastic?) It ends with a 10o-Day Playbook – a plan for the first few months of retirement, customized just for you based on your assessment scores.

In the interim, your certified Fit-To-Retire coach will encourage you to ask a lot of questions. Just as he or she will ask questions of you. Those questions are used to build your exclusive Pre-Retirement Checklist. Because the questions you ask, as Mr. Rogers’ says, are just as important as the answers. And in the asking and answering, you’ll gain peace of mind that you can handle whatever stress comes your way.
